Play day
Thousands of excited local children and parents descended on Ardrossan South Beach to celebrate National Playday recently.

Almost 3,000 youngsters spent the afternoon having fun at the event hosted by North Ayrshire Council's Children's Outreach Services.

This year the theme was 'Our Place' and the fun was completely free of charge.Youngsters under the age of twelve got their hands dirty with paint and sand in the Messy Marquee, whilst others picked up some circus skills or scaled the heady heights of the climbing wall.

The fun event, held on 4 August, included Towdabout and Tadpull mobile playgrounds, a giant hamster ball, a construction skills workshop, a 7-seater bike.

There was also a whole host of fun arts and crafts activities, as well as a waterslide, biscuit icing, portable sports pitch and a range of inflatable equipment. The children even had a visit from some famous faces - Buzz, Woody and Jessie from Toy Story.

Portfolio holder for Children's Services, Councillor John Bell, experienced the fun for himself.

Said Councillor Bell: "It was wonderful to see so many young children – and adults - having such a great time at National Playday.

"Play is an important part of a child's development so it was great to see so many local families getting involved in the various activities available."
