Services A to Z:

Be wary of cold callers

North Ayrshire Council's Trading Standards team is once again warning elderly and vulnerable people to be wary of companies who 'cold-call'.

Our Trading Standards team has received a number of recent calls regarding SAS Fire and Security Systems Ltd and Crime Research UK who sell security systems across the UK. Crime Research UK makes initial calls on behalf of SAS Fire and Security Systems Ltd.

Consumers have mistakenly reported that these companies are working with the Council or police to reduce crime. This is not the case and some consumers feel they have been misled into making purchases because of this.

These companies reportedly indicate that the crime rate in a consumer's area is high and suggest their present security needs updating and inviting you to speak to a representative who is in the area. Their security systems, if tied to finance arrangements, can cost thousands of pounds.

It's important that elderly and vulnerable people in our communities are aware that some companies use high-pressure tactics to sell their goods. Those individuals should speak to a relative or neighbour if they have any concerns.

You can register to stop unsolicited telephone calls or unwanted mail while Strathclyde Police can advise on your home security free of charge.

PC Jim Dougall, community safety officer, said: "If you are 'cold called', you should never feel forced into letting someone into your house - ask them to come back when a neighbour or family member can also be there. Also, never

sign paperwork without a witness or sign anything while being pressured. If in doubt, contact your local community safety department on the number above."

"The cost of securing your home properly can be minimal. Simple things like shutting doors and windows and locking them where possible deters opportunist thieves."

A home security survey can be carried out free of charge at a time to suit the householder. Anyone requiring further advice should call 01294 404421.

If there are community wardens in your area, they can also advise you of the right people to speak to about home security in your area.

Trading Standards have ensured the cancellation of individual contracts totalling over £150,000 for local consumers who have wished to cancel their contracts signed at home just in last year.

We have also worked closely with our colleagues across the UK to ensure effective compliance. However we need you to inform us if you feel you have been misled, pressured or conned into a contract which you later feel was misleading.

We have set up a direct telephone line providing assistance for consumers from cold calling.

Also if you wish to register to stop calls and mail we can advise you.

Trading Standards Advice Team: 01294 324917.

Consumers have a legal right to cancel contracts signed at home.

There is also a legal requirement for the company to trade fairly. However, it is important you cancel any contract promptly if you change your mind. Always seek our advice.

Also North Ayrshire Council Trading Standards  ensures fair trading, our services are free and confidential.
