Road Safety Advice

On Sunday the clocks went back…. But did you know that child pedestrian fatalities double following the switch from British Summer Time?

British road casualty figures from 2008 show that more than twice the number of child pedestrians were killed on the nation's roads in November compared with October and December.

We are encouraging children to wear bright, reflective clothing, especially for walks to and from school – we are also calling for adults and drivers to be more aware at this time of year.

Be Bright Be Seen Tips for Pedestrians and Cyclists

Brightly coloured or fluorescent clothing shows up well in daylight and at dusk.

If you're out by the roads when it's dark, wear reflective gear to make sure you can be seen in car headlights. Reflective vests, sashes or wrist bands work well. Remember that fluorescent clothing doesn't work after dark!

And, don't forget you can accessorise! Even small items such as clip on reflectors, armbands and stickers on your outfit or school bag will improve your visibility.

It is the law to have clean and working lights on your bike - red at the back and white at the front - you must also fit your bike with red rear reflectors. Fitting spoke reflectors will also help you to be seen in the dark. Always wear appropriate clothing to suit the conditions.

'Being Bright' isn't the only way to be safer. If you're out at night, choose routes and crossing places that are well lit and remember to always use the Green Cross Code - Find the safest place to cross, Stop, Look and Listen.

Tips for Drivers

Although the number of people being killed or injured on our roads is decreasing, the change in the clocks makes November particularly dangerous for all road users.

During the week, nearly 40% of all pedestrian casualties occur between 3pm and 6pm, and the darker evenings mean drivers and pedestrians need to take extra care on our roads.

Drivers need to be especially watchful during their journeys, and ensure their vehicle headlights are working correctly and are clean.
