Millport Coastal Flood Protection Scheme

On 10 November 2020 the Cabinet reached the final decision and confirmed the Millport Coastal Flood Protection Scheme without modification, agreed the indicative project timescale and approved the commencement of the final design of the scheme.

The Scheme became operational on 13 January 2021 and the detailed design development started. North Ayrshire Council has developed the Millport Coastal Flood Protection Scheme with close community involvement.

In January 2023, Van Oord UK Ltd were appointed as the Main Contractor for the works. Works began on site in March 2023.

What does the scheme involve?

Onshore works (spring 2023 to Autumn 2024)

Precast concrete walls and stepped revetments.
Wall repairs and repainting.
Landscaping and improvement works.

Onshore work schedule

Stuart Street and Guildford Street: Wall repairs and repainting, March to June 2024.
Glasgow Street (west of the bus shelter): Precast concrete wall, January 2024 to April 2024.
Cross House revetment and Glasgow Street: Precast concrete wall and stepped revetment, April 2023 to April 2024.
Glasgow Street (east of the bus shelter): Precast concrete wall, January 2024 to April 2024.
Crosshouse to Kelburn Street: Precast concrete wall, adjustment to levels of grass area, March 2023 to January 2024.
Kames Bay: Precast concrete stepped revetment, raising grass area, October 2023 to May 2024.
Milburn Street: Precast concrete wall, August 2023 to December 2023.
Crichton Street: Precast concrete wall and stepped revetment, January 2024 to April 2024.
Marine Parade: Precast concrete wall, May 2024 to July 2024.
Refurbish 2 existing jetties, April and May 2024.

Offshore works (September 2023 to February 2024)

Breakwater and rock revetment.
Onshore connected rock revetment (incorporated as part of the offshore works).

Offshore work schedule

Construction of the offshore breakwater started in September and expected completion is February 2024.

Aside from the offshore rockworks, the following foreshore construction is scheduled:

Breakwater at Crichton Street
Rock revetment at Milburn Street
Rock revetment at Clyde Street
Rock revetment on the foreshore at Glasgow Street/ Kelburn Street

The foreshore rockworks started in October at Clyde Street and this is mostly complete. In January, work began on the breakwater at Crichton Street and Clyde Street, using a barge (at spring tides, high water).

In mid-January, work also began on the revetments at Kelburn Street, Milburn Street, and Clyde Street. At these locations lorries are bringing the rock material to site, where it is offloaded and placed using land-based plant (excavators).

Expected completion of the rockworks is the second half of February 2024.

Ferry

Some of the rock for the foreshore is being delivered by lorries, which are brought to the island on private barges (not the Calmac Ferries), via the Calmac Slipway.

These deliveries were scheduled for late-December and the beginning of January, but the weather prevented this and these deliveries were re-scheduled to mid-January. These deliveries were during the night, outside of Calmac operating hours, which meant ferry traffic was unaffected.

Working hours

The working hours for onshore works are:

Monday to Friday: 7.30am to 5.30pm
Saturday: 7.30am to 1pm

There will be no working on Sundays and bank holidays.

Milburn Street and Crichton Street

Work at Millburn Street and Crichton Street is progressing well. The onshore rock works have been completed (still offshore works ongoing as described above). We are currently digging out the foundations for the installation of the concrete flood wall sections. We have started breaking out rock for the toe of revetment.

Crosshouse

Works at Crosshouse and the east end of Glasgow Street are progressing well. The section of flood wall in front of Crosshouse is complete, and cladding is being added.

Glasgow Street

We have started placing the concrete stepped revetment at Glasgow Street. We are starting work on the seating on the promenade. The staircases and ramp onto the beach outside Garrison House are in progress (we are currently awaiting delivery of the hand railing).

Kames Bay

We have started reprofiling the stockpile of material at Kames Bay. Works have also started on the new culvert (drainage channel) and the concrete stepped revetment.

Shortly, some welfare cabins will be moved from Glasgow Street and relocated to the middle section of Kames Bay.
