Regulation of Investigatory Powers (Scotland) Act 2000 (RIPSA)
Some activities of Services of this Council are covered by the Regulation of Investigatory Powers (Scotland) Act 2000 hereafter described as RIPSA.
These activities which are deemed lawful if properly authorised, include carrying out covert surveillance or using covert human intelligence sources to uncover crime.

2009 One was to detect vandalism to vehicles parked overnight.

Two were to used to catch the seller of illicit and illegal tobacco to school children and young adults.

Two were used to conduct a benefits investigation living together case(both applications were cancelled).

One was to survey a suspected seller of counterfeit goods making deliveries and collections.

An independent inspection of the Council's arrangements is carried out for the Surveillance Commissioner.
Anyone aggrieved at the activities of a public authority, like North Ayrshire Council, can complain directly to an Investigatory Powers Tribunal set up under RIPSA.
