Dog Warden Service within North Ayrshire

The Dog Warden patrols the area for stray dogs during office hours  Monday-Thursday 09:00 - 16:45 hrs and Friday 09:00 - 16:30 hrs.  There is no out-of-office service but in emergencies pest control staff will attend when practicable.

 

The Dog Warden has powers to seize any dog in a public area which he believes to be a stray.

 

What happens to Stray Dogs which are Seized?

All stray dogs are taken to our Pound at Ellandee Kennels, Balgray Road, Torranyard, near Irvine, KA11 2AP, Telephone Number : (01294) 850270 where they will be kept for a period of seven days unless reclaimed.

 

Fixed Fine

A payment of kennelling fees plus a fixed fine of £25.00 are due. 

 

Failure to Collect Dog

Failure to collect the dog within seven days results in the dog being sold, given away or in very rare cases destroyed.  The Local Police Station is notified when a dog is seized by the Dog Warden.

What happens to stray dogs once they have been picked up by the dog wardens?
Stray dogs are picked up by the Dog Warden Service and kept in kennels. If not claimed after 7 days, the dogs are then owned by the Council and are available to be re-housed. Most are given to Dogs Trust for rehoming.

What does a Dog Warden do?
A dog warden patrols the area for stray dogs during office hours. The dog warden has powers to remove any dog from a public area, which s/he believes to be a stray, and impound it.

If my dog is picked up by the Dog Warden, will I get told?
If your dog has been microchipped or has a name tag, the Dog Warden will contact you to tell you that your dog has been impounded. You will need to pay an administration fee to retrieve your dog.

How much does it cost to adopt a dog that the council has picked up?
The Council do not charge for you to adopt a dog that the Council has picked up. The kennel may charge for their costs.
