The Disability Discrimination Act
Under the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) employers must make 'reasonable adjustments' to employment arrangements or premises if they place disabled people at a substantial disadvantage compared with non-disabled people. This may be in relation to working patterns, specialist equipment or physical access to premises.
Look for employers who display the 'Double Tick Initiative' symbol. This symbol has been developed so that employers can show their commitment to good practice in employing disabled people. Commitments under this scheme include offering a guaranteed interview to any disabled applicant who meets the essential criteria of the post they applied for and making every effort to help disabled employees stay in employment.
If you require further advice and support on finding employment, the Jobcentre has trained Disability Employment Advisers (DEAs) who can provide specialist support on employment and training issues for people with disabilities.
