Using Recycle Centres

The Council operates a number of Recycling Centres| and points which are located throughout North Ayrshire. The following is a guide to using them.

 

Building Waste

Only bricks and rubble can be deposited. Soil can only be deposited at Shewalton Transfer Station||.


Cans

Can banks are for both aluminum and steel cans.

 

Clothes and Shoes
Only deposit the following items in the clothes banks:

  • Textiles
  • Sheets
  • Blankets and towels
  • Curtains
  • Shoes (tied together or bagged in pairs)
  • Handbags.

The following should not be deposited:

  • Soiled rags
  • Carpet, rugs
  • Any glass, metal or paper.

Glass
Glass containers for food, pharmaceutical and household items such as jam jars and wine bottles are recyclable.

Avoid contamination when recycling glass bottles and jars by ensuring that you do not include:

  • Glass saucepans or "Pyrex" cookware
  • Crystal glass, drinking glasses or ashtrays
  • Plate or mirror glass
  • Laboratory glass or light bulbs
  • China, stones, bags and other materials.

You should empty and rinse clean containers, remove lids and corks and put glass into the bottle bank for the correct colour. Blue glass should be put in the green bottle bank.

Oil
Only waste motor oil should be deposited in the oil recycling banks.

Please do not contaminate the motor oil with:

  • Cooking oil
  • Hydraulic oil
  • Solvent based oils e.g. cooling fluid
  • Brake fluid.

Paper

The following paper can be recycled:

  • Newspapers and Magazines
  • Mailings, preferably without envelopes
  • Telephone directories
  • Any other white papers.

Please make sure the paper isn't contaminated with food, metals, glass or plastic.

Soil
Soil is not accepted at the recycling centres but can be deposited at Shewalton Transfer Station|.

Wood
All non-processed wood and plywood can be recycled.

Please do not deposit for recycling:

  • Chipboard
  • Laminate
  • Wood attached to other materials such as felt or wire.

MDF can be recycled at Bartonholm Recycling Centre and Dreghorn Recycling Centre.

What types of wood can be recycled?
