School Crossing Patrol Service
The Council provides 65 designated crossing points (PDF 42Kb)
The service assists primary school children crossing roads at designated points at the start and finish of each school day.
Pelican Crossings
In line with the Local Authority Road Safety Officers' Association recommendation, Pelican Crossings are considered to be safer crossing facilities and hence are not manned by School Crossing patrollers.
Parental Responsibility
It should be noted that even where a school crossing patrol is provided, parents remain responsible for ensuring their child's safety on their whole journey to and from school.
Legal Powers
It is an offence under The Road Traffic Regulations Act 1984, for a driver to fail to stop for a patroller wearing the official uniform and displaying the patrol stop sign.
It is also an offence for a driver to move off whilst the patroller is still on the road.
The school crossing patrols were given extended powers by The Transport (Scotland) Act 2001. In addition to escorting children across the road en route to and from school, patrollers can now stop traffic to assist adults crossing the road.
