Scottish Cycle Training Scheme
We offer cycle training to all primary six or seven children in all North Ayrshire schools. All training within the schools is free.
Schools choose between summer sessions or autumn sessions.
The Road Safety Officers train all potential instructors who may be teachers, classroom assistants or parent volunteers. The training is completed before the cycling season begins. It includes briefings on our training material and hands on training in the playground.
Our staff:
-
Carry out all training of trainers
-
Monitor and support the delivery of the training
-
Ensure the cycle track is in good condition
-
Carry out cycle safety checks before training begins, and inform parents by letter of any dangerous faults found on a child's bike
-
Provide all resources, which includes the cycle trainers pack, cycle training book, arrive alive highway code and parents leaflets
-
Maintain a register of trainers for each school
-
Collate numbers of pupils who take part in cycle training each session
-
Provide signs and reflective vests for on road training
-
Risk assesses any cycle training site.
The Road Safety Officers carry out a cycling assessment after training has been finished. The pupils will receive their assessment report, a badge and certificate. Pupils can complete a Highway Code test before the practical assessment.
This year a pilot scheme that includes "on-road " training will be introduced in some areas. The training will take place near to schools and will provide experience that is more practical.
