Services A to Z:

Transfer from Primary to Secondary School

Pupils normally transfer from primary school to secondary school between the ages of 11 and 12 years.

All non-denominational secondary schools in North Ayrshire have catchment areas.  Pupils who attend a primary school because of a placing request may need to submit a placing request to attend the non-denominational secondary school of their choice.

The denominational secondary school serving North Ayrshire is St Matthew's Academy. Admission to St Matthew's Academy follows attendance at a denominational primary school. Children attending a non-denominational primary school will require to make a placing request to attend St Matthew's Academy.

What if I want my child to go to a secondary school that is not in my catchment area?
You will have to make a placing request and if there is space in that school it will be granted.

What happens when my child is due to transfer from primary to secondary school?
Pupils normally transfer from primary school to its associated secondary school between the ages of 11 and 12. Your local primary school will be able to tell you the name of the secondary school to which your child would normally transfer after the Primary 7 stage. Please note that if your address is not in the catchment area for the secondary school of your choice, you will have to make a placing request even if your child attends an associated primary school. In the case of St Matthew’s Academy pupil transfer is automatic for pupils attending a Council denominational primary.

My child is due to move to secondary school after the holidays. How can I find out which school she/he should go to?
Your child's primary school will advise you of the secondary school which your child should attend. A child who attends a primary as a result of a successful placing request, may require a further placing request to attend the secondary school of their choice.
