Early Admission to Primary School

Traditionally in Scotland almost all children aged between 4 and a half and 5 years enrol in primary school at the start of term in August.

Decisions about whether a child would benefit from entering school education early will in all cases seek to promote the best interests of the child.  Every child will be assessed by an early years specialist to assess whether they are at a stage of development suitable for entry.

If you decide to make an application for your child to be assessed for entry into school education early, you can get an application form from your nursery, primary school or by downloading the form here (PDF, 14Kb).

Only applications submitted before 15 March for the following school session will be accepted.  Parent/carers will be notified in writing by 30 April of the decision.

How can I get Early Entry to primary school for my child?
If you think your child should start primary school at a younger age than is usual, you should contact your local school to discuss this. Applications to apply for Early Entry are available from nurseries, schools and Educational Services Headquarters. This is a very big decision and it is advisable to speak with the nursery staff about your child’s readiness for school.
