Nursery places

Nursery education is offered to children aged four in community maintained nursery classes and schools. In North Ayrshire we have 37 primary schools |which have nursery classes| attached to them. This provision is managed by the headteacher.

We also have four nursery centres which cater for children aged 0-5 and one centre which provides for children aged 0-3 and their families. Each establishment provides 2.5 hour nursery sessions morning and afternoon.

Springvale Nursery Centre provides a small number of extended day places.

Why can my child only have 5 mornings or 5 afternoon sessions of funded pre-school education?
Children are funded for 475 hours annually, which is 12.5 hours per week over the school session. This may be most conveniently configured as 5 sessions of at least 2.5 hours per week. Children should have no more than 3 hours of continuous pre-school education without a clear break. Pre school education should not exceed 5 sessions in any one week.

When will my child become eligible for a nursery place?
Children are entitled to a nursery education place in the month after their third birthday, with birthdays between 2 . However, children can sometimes be enrolled and admitted immediately following their third birthday provided that places are available, other children attending are settled and no additional resources are required.

When do I need to register my child for nursery school
Registration for all local authority nurseries and partner provider centres in North AYrshire will take normally on the third week in January. Parents wishing to register their children for nursery education for pre-school and ante-pre-school with dates of birth between 1 March and last day in Feb, should apply directly to the nursery of their choice. Birth certificates should be produced at the time of registration.
