Accessing the service
Children are tested and assessed by Instrumental Service Staff as to suitability for instrumental lessons. Lessons normally start in Primary 5 but may start at an earlier stage, or in secondary school. Lessons are held during school day.
Secondary pupils will be placed on a rotational timetable to minimise disruption to classes.
Music activities
Bands, choirs and orchestras increase the opportunities for young people to perform at local, national and international level. When progress has been made children learning an instrument will be expected to join a school or North Ayrshire ensemble.
Our music groups participate in a wide range of festivals and concerts both here and abroad. Weekend courses and master classes enhance the school programme. Special programmes are held during holiday periods, weekends and after school for Rock Music, Traditional Music, Bands, Choirs and Orchestras.
Local competitions such as North Ayrshire Young Musician of the Year are focal points for excellence.
Projects with Scottish Opera and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra have featured over the recent years. In partnership with the Royal Scottish Academy of Music, a string instrument tuition programme is offered in the Garnock valley.
Links with local festival groups such as the Ayrshire Music Festival ensure additional public performance opportunities for our students.
International partners in Spain, Finland, Sweden, Norway and Germany have enhanced our standing on a wider stage.
