Election Nominations

Individuals wishing to stand for election at local government elections, or elections to the Scottish, UK, or European Parliaments, must be validly nominated before their names can appear on the ballot paper.  A deposit may also require to be paid.

The nomination process for each election is set out in statute and is made clear by the Returning Officer  to prospective candidates at the time of the election.

Generally speaking persons standing for a registered political party must be authorised by that party and must consent to their nomination.  Candidates nominated by registered political parties may also be authorised to use that party's registered descriptions and emblems on the ballot paper.

Candidates standing as independents are not entitled to use any description other than independent nor can they use a logo on the ballot paper.
