Community Councils are independent of the local authority but the Council may assist them both with funding and administrative support. The purpose of a Community Council is "to ascertain, co-ordinate and express to the Local Authorities for its area, and to public authorities, the views of the community which it represents, in relation to matters for which those authorities are responsible, and to take such action in the interests of that community as appears to it to be expedient and practicable." Community Councils may consult and represent the local community on specific issues and make known to the local authority and other public bodies the views of local people on all matters affecting them.
Community Councils have the right to be consulted on any planning applications in their areas and are kept informed about licensing applications.
