National Assistance Act funerals
Sometimes people die and there are no relatives or anyone willing to make the funeral arrangements. It therefore becomes a matter of public health concern for the local authority to arrange the funeral.
This is done in terms of Section 50 of the National Assistance Act 1948. The Council is entitled to recover their expenses from the deceased person's estate.
The Environmental Health service arranges a few National Assistance Act funerals every year. In all cases they are carried out with sensitivity and dignity.
