Memorials in cemeteries

The right to erect a memorial is provided as part of the purchase of Exclusive Right of Burial, this means, anyone who purchases a lair is entitled to a memorial of their choice.

Certain limitations are applied by the North Ayrshire Council Management Rules for Cemeteries. Before the memorial is erected, permission is needed from the Council but in general there is an opportunity to pick an appropriate memorial.

All memorial works carried out within North Ayrshire Council Cemeteries must be by Stonemasons or Monumental Sculptors registered under the British Register of Accredited Monumental Masons (BRAMM).

Sculptors need to contact the Council with details of the construction of the memorial, the method of erection and the inscription.

Do all graves have to have a headstone or memorial?
There is no requirement for a headstone or memorial to be erected. This is a matter of choice for the family or executors.

Can a memorial be made of any material?
