Bullying in schools

North Ayrshire Council has a policy on bullying and harassment in schools which clearly sets out:

  • What bullying and harassment are
  • What pupils and parents should do if they suspect bullying is taking place
  • How the school should deal with reports of such incidents.

Our vision is of a North Ayrshire where all children and young people can enjoy the full benefits of their educational experience and reach their full potential free from bullying and harassment.

The following aims are at the core of North Ayrshire anti-bullying policy.

  • Educational establishments should develop a culture or ethos which is based on the values on which Scottish society is based – wisdom, justice, compassion and integrity.
  • Any allegation of bullying should be taken seriously and investigated thoroughly.
  • Appropriate action should be taken to resolve incidents in both the short term and long term interests of the alleged victim.

Everyone involved should be actively involved in the development and implementation of the anti-bullying policy in each individual educational establishment and should receive appropriate training.

Many web sites offer advice on bullying including:

My child is the victim of bullying at school. What can I do?
You should report the incident of bullying to your child's teacher or other member of staff or adult. Your child should also be encouraged to do so. The school will investigate and do all it can to minimise any further inappropriate behaviour recurring. This can include a range of strategies to suit the particular circumstances and you should make sure you are involved in any discussions. Remember that what the school is trying to do is to gather evidence which establishes that bullying has gone on and then to find a lasting solution that ensures your child is no longer bullied at school.
