Archive Service

Access to archive records in North Ayrshire is available online |through the Ayrshire Archives website.

 

You can request archive-related items at the Library and Information Service at the Vennel Local and Family History Centre, Irvine.

 

Ayrshire Archives was formed by North Ayrshire Council, East Ayrshire Council and South Ayrshire Council to enable the three Councils to work together to preserve and manage records of historical importance.

Will there be anyone available to help me find what I'm looking for in the archives?
Our staff will be happy to tell you which collections would best answer your enquiry, and show you how to use the finding aids in the searchroom.

Why can't I use a pen in the archives?
You can't use a pen in the archives because if you accidentally write on the documents, we can't erase it. You can, of course, use a pencil.

What sort of records can I find in an archive?
In an archive, you may be able to find plans, maps, photographs, ledgers, volumes, and individual documents and letters, estate records, business and industrial records, records created by various organisations, associations, trade incorporations, trade unions and societies, and collections created by individuals and families.

What is an archive?
Archives are original documents produced by official bodies, societies and individuals that are no longer in current use. They can be used for all sorts of research, including local history and tracing your family history.

How much does it cost to use the archives?
Use of the archive is free. There is a charge for reproduction of information.

Do you hold all records of predecessor local authorities?
Records of predecessor local authorities can be found across the archive services of the council.

Can I trace my family tree using the archives?
If you are looking for births, deaths and marriages, the best place to find this information is through the General Registrar for Scotland, or if you know where the birth, death or marriage took place, you can check with the local registrar of that area. If you are looking for other information, such as announcements in the paper, photographs, letters, etc, then this information might be in the archives.

Can I take photos of the documents in the archives?
You may use a digital camera only if the Archivist deems there to be no risk to the document and if you complete the necessary copyright forms. No flash photography of any kind is permitted.

Can I borrow documents from the archives?
Because our documents are irreplaceable, we do not let them leave the Archive searchroom. If they are not too fragile or subject to copyright and other restrictions, we may photocopy individual items, or you may be allow to photograph them.
