Why can't I use a pen in the archives?You can't use a pen in the archives because if you accidentally write on the documents, we can't erase it. You can, of course, use a pencil.
What sort of records can I find in an archive?In an archive, you may be able to find plans, maps, photographs, ledgers, volumes, and individual documents and letters, estate records, business and industrial records, records created by various organisations, associations, trade incorporations, trade unions and societies, and collections created by individuals and families.
What is an archive?Archives are original documents produced by official bodies, societies and individuals that are no longer in current use. They can be used for all sorts of research, including local history and tracing your family history.
Can I trace my family tree using the archives?If you are looking for births, deaths and marriages, the best place to find this information is through the General Registrar for Scotland, or if you know where the birth, death or marriage took place, you can check with the local registrar of that area. If you are looking for other information, such as announcements in the paper, photographs, letters, etc, then this information might be in the archives.
Can I take photos of the documents in the archives?You may use a digital camera only if the Archivist deems there to be no risk to the document and if you complete the necessary copyright forms. No flash photography of any kind is permitted.
Can I borrow documents from the archives?Because our documents are irreplaceable, we do not let them leave the Archive searchroom. If they are not too fragile or subject to copyright and other restrictions, we may photocopy individual items, or you may be allow to photograph them.
