SECTION 2 - Criteria for Assessment
11.In which way does this application address Council priorities?
Reduce social inclusion for a defined group. Provide group support to religious or ethnic minority individuals who may suffer discrimination.
12.How will the expenditure develop the group/organisation and benefit the Local Community?

Formally create and structure a support group for the religious, cultural and educational well being of Sikh members of North Ayrshire.

13.How does the Application show innovation or development?

Provide a meeting place to support members of a religious minority (Sikh). Develop a programme of activities, education, and mutual support for families who may feel isloated or threatened.

14.Overall Assessment?
The group intend to meet on Sundays not only to cover religious observance but to develop activities of interest to their younger members. In addition they see their role as primarily one of information and support for Sikhs living in North Ayrshire. At the moment there is approx. 60 involved but this could increase to 200 if they attracted Sikhs from further afield in Ayrshire.
An initial aim of the group would be to advise and guide individuals suffering from racial abuse, which although not expressed as a major problem in North Ayrshire, does occur.
The creation of a formally established group would facilitate contact of the group by our own agencies charged with community capacity building by the council. As a new group their fundraising has been virtually non-existent and they should be expected to become self sufficient if possible or at lest make some effort to generate funds through subscriptions or other traditional methods.

SECTION 2 - Criteria for Assessment
11.In which way does this application address Council priorities?
This group is a good example of local community self-help. Young people, with some support, are creating something for themselves. The Council's policy and priorities are almost all addressed through this initiative.
12.How will the expenditure develop the group/organisation and benefit the Local Community?
The benefits to the local community are enormous. Young people are able to access a purpose built park to practice their skills without inconveniencing others. The park is also providing young people with the opportunity to behave in a responsible manner by raising funds and assisting with the management of the park.
13.How does the Application show innovation or development?
The pilot skate park at Auchenharvie is constantly in need of repair and maintenance. The group continue to raise money to achieve their goal of a permanent park, but they cannot ignore the costs of ensuring the safety of their existing 'wooden' park. The park involves young people in its management and to ensure continuity of responsible support, training needs to be arranged for the group.
14.Overall Assessment?
The main target, a permanent skate park, remains the major focus for the group and their current assets, approximately £25,000, will be taken up by paying a civil engineering bill to this end. Maintenance and training for the young people are the reason for this application, and these are worthy of further support to the group. The group continue to fundraise and are planning some events to this end.
